Olympics Fail? Not if you count all those who watched on TV

by the numbers, via itswilder:

Think NBC’s coverage of the Olympics sucks? You’ve got no one to blame but yourself. Here’s why:

1) …”spoilers” actually increase interest in a program: it’s the whole “It’s the journey, not the destination” thing… “Yes, I know how it ends… I want to see HOW!” 1

Saturday’s coverage, which included swimmer Ryan Lochte’s victory over rival Michael Phelps in the 400-meter individual medley, gathered 28.7 million — also a new mark for the first night of athletic competition at the Summer Olympics. 2

2) An NBC Sports Group spokesperson said via email from London, “We are quite aware of the chatter on Twitter about the Olympics and we embrace it. We feel that the increased buzz on social media helps to drive awareness of the Games.” 3

There’s 2 quick reasons why NBC doesn’t care about the fact that twitter spoils big endings or that #NBCFail is a trending topic on twitter. It’s all about the numbers.

If the data/ratings say you’re watching in droves despite all the negative reaction, why should NBC care?

“Let’s see how the competition goes…”

Just to beat a dead horse, after seeing the post noting Apple’s iPhone business now brings in more revenue than all of Microsoft’s businesses combined, Jason Hiner reminded me of Steve Ballmer’s classic 2007 video laughing off the iPhone announcement (above).

I’m always amazed how much people trust Google Maps and GPS applications, often suspending what they can see with their naked eye for what a pin on their maps tells them…

Clearly Google Maps surveyors don’t go south of the river at this time of night guvnor.
Second attempt slightly better. Someone should tell the Port of London Authority about the obstruction to navigation in midchannel though

I know some of you questioned if this picture was actually taken by someone claiming to be a pro. Flipping through the submissions today, I decided to run this, also taken by that same photographer.
