what happened in roughly 1870 though
why was there temporary internet
with a few people searching for pokemon?

So, me being me, I couldn’t let this stand unexplained and looked into the data on Google Books. The one 19th century citation for “Pokemon” appears to be A Classical Dictionary of Biography, Mythology, and Geography Based on the Larger Dictionaries by the English lexicographer Sir William Smith. Was he a Time Lord, perhaps an alias of The Doctor? Sorry, but no. It turns out that this was just a simple OCR error in scanning. Google’s optical character recognition just misinterpreted the name of Polemon, a Roman client king who governed part of Greek Anatolia in the 1st century BCE, as Pokemon.
