11 Memes that were popular 5 years ago (in 2006)

Today I’m celebrating my 5-year anniversary with Miss Lauren Reid! Our first date was on opening night of “Snakes on a Plane” with about a dozen of her closest friends, and we spent long into the night discussing pop culture, music, and internet memes.

“Snakes on a Plane” shares a special place in my heart for this reason, although it was also one of the most anticipated internet memes ever, so I’d probably like it anyway. All this nostalgia for memes that were popular in 5 years ago got me thinking to make this list, a definitive record of shared cultural experiences from 2006:

Looking at the list it’s easy to see how much has changed in 5 years, and personally how much I’ve grown up along with these changes.  Not everything holds it’s cultural currency, but thankfully our relationship has endured. L
